Round one of the Munster League kicked off on Sunday at our own race "CrossBarrs at Fota". Check out our previous blog on how the day went but it was an awesome day, and one that words can't really do justice (so check out the photo albums and highlights video here: stfinbarrscyclingclub.weebly.com/home/crossbarrs-at-fota2403709 .
Apart from the organisation of the race, the club also had 5 riders competing on the day. Stevie, Ger, and Robbie took to the line in the "B" race, and Russell and Richie went in the "A" race. The start of both races would be crucial, with one line of 50 riders lined up across the wide start line, sprinting into the 1st corner. This was mental, but the fairest way to start the 1st race of the league as no rider had earned a grid place, based on results. Ger, Robbie, and Stevie all got off the line well, and were in great position going into the crucial first bend. As well as that, the wide and long starting straight allowed riders to battle safely for position, before the first bend. Ger and Stevie built on their solid showing in Grange Castle and rode strongly for what was a long (53 minute) B race on a demanding course with Ger finishing 8th, and Stevie 13th. Robbie started well, but a missed season of racing took it's toll and he faded towards the latter part of the race and came in 34th, but more importantly, he had been bitten by the 'cross bug. Next up were Russell and Richie. Once again they lined up amongst the 50 riders spread across one line. Both were in the top 10 riders going into the 1st corner after a good start. Richie pressed on, but was not able to follow the winning move, and came in just outside the podium in 4th place. Russell was battling for the m40 league and finished a solid 6th in that category. With their results it means The Barrs are sitting in 5th in the league team placing on 46 points. However, Ger and Stevie have been promoted to the A race to fight for point for this classification, and certainly a podium place is within reach for the club. It was a truly awesome racing experience. To see 107 riders, plus 25 underage riding 'cross at our race, and in the Munster League was nothing short of brilliant. Many stayed to support the races that they weren't riding, and the atmosphere created was indescribable. The shouts, cheers, and cowbells in the woods made the hair stand up on the back of your neck as you raced by. CX in Munster has arrived. Onwards to Ennis this Sunday (remember online entries close this Thursday- click on the button to enter!)
